According to old traditions, on the second day of the Chinese New Year, 
married daughters return to their parental home with their husbands 
and children to have lunch together, which is called the "New Year's Opening Meal".
按老传统，大年初二，出嫁的女儿要带着丈夫和孩子一起回娘家吃午饭，这顿饭叫“开年饭”。

The father-in-law usually prepares the most sumptuous feast 
to express gratitude to his son-in-law for 
taking care of his daughter throughout the year.
